One of the most confusing issues in financial planning is credit and debit cards, and it makes it no less confusing when the card is provided by a store, like Walmart. If you have a Walmart MoneyCard or are thinking about getting one, you should know where and how you can use it. We have done the research to tell you exactly that.
This depends on the type of Walmart card that you are in possession of. The official Walmart MoneyCard is supported by Visa and Mastercard. Because of this, it can be used anywhere that accepts Visa or Mastercard. This includes Paypal.
The Walmart Credit Card, on the other hand, can only be used at Walmart locations for purchases to the enterprise. This includes the Walmart website, any Walmart supercenter or marketplace, Sam's, and Murphy's.
So now you have a better idea of where you can use a Walmart Money Card. However, you may have other questions about using these cards. Keep reading to learn more.
Where To Use Walmart Cards
When you hear about a card from Walmart, it's easy to assume that Walmart and its associations are the only locations where you can use it. While this is true in some cases, it, fortunately, isn't always the case. We'll discuss this further here.
Locations For The Walmart MoneyCard
The newest and shiniest of the Walmart cards is the Walmart Money Card. This is a prepaid debit card that earns you up to 3% cash back on purchases from Walmart. This is obviously a great way to encourage consumers to buy at their locations, but it isn't the only place you can use this card.
The Walmart MoneyCard is backed by Visa and Mastercard banks. Because of this, cardholders can purchase from any location, both in the United States and internationally, that accepts Visa or Mastercard.
As you may already well know, this includes grocery stores, retail stores, restaurants, and everything in between. Most businesses in our industrialized world accept Visa and Mastercard to maximize their business earnings.
Locations For The Walmart Credit Card
Now let's discuss the Walmart Credit Card. This may also be referred to as a Walmart Store Card. This card is full credit, meaning it is not prepaid. This type of card is used to purchase items on credit, and the cardholder does not pay the balance until after the purchase has been made.
The Walmart Credit Card is created to aid frequent Walmart customers in their purchases and maximize their savings, with up to 3% cash back.
This card is not meant to be used outside of the Walmart enterprise. It can be used at any Walmart supercenter or marketplace, Sam's, Murphy's, and Walmart-associated gas stations.
Using Them With Paypal
As previously discussed, the Walmart Credit Card is full credit and is unable to be used at any location other than the Walmart enterprises. This also excludes Paypal.
However, the Walmart MoneyCard can be used in conjunction with Paypal. This is important because you can only deposit money into your Paypal account electronically, and you can deposit physical money into your Walmart MoneyCard account.
This will allow you more flexibility, as you can deposit money to your MoneyCard and then send it to your Paypal account if that is your need.
You can easily send money to your Paypal account using your Walmart MoneyCard, and you can also have payments to your Paypal account transferred to your Walmart MoneyCard.
Because these are both prepaid accounts and because the Walmart MoneyCard is backed by Visa and Mastercard, this is a possibility.
Using The Walmart Money Card
Now that we've covered where you can use your Walmart MoneyCard, you may have some other questions on your mind about how to use this financial tool. We'll answer some of the most commonly asked here.
Can You Save Money With The Walmart MoneyCard?
The short answer is a resounding, yes! But how do you maximize your savings with this card? Firstly, the Walmart MoneyCard is a prepaid card, mainly for people who don't have or don't prefer a bank account. However, with a prepaid card comes a monthly fee.
Fortunately, the Walmart MoneyCard fees are extremely low in comparison to other prepaid cards. To initially get the card, you can either go online to do so and pay nothing, or you can pick one up at any Walmart for $1.
Beyond this initial purchase, you will have a monthly $5 fee once the card is activated and your account is set up.
The nice thing about the fee is that it can be waived, and quite easily. This is especially true if you are going to use this card as a primary debit card and will have your paycheck deposited directly into the account. If your monthly deposit meets or exceeds $1,000, then the fee will be waived for the following month.
Now, let's talk about cash back. You can get 3% cash back at Walmart.com, 2% cash back at Murphy's or Walmart-associated gas stations, and 1% cash back at any Walmart store. This includes Sam's.
The disappointment in all of this is that the cash back from Walmart MoneyCard is limited to only $75 per year. While this may not seem like a substantial amount of money, if you use this as part of your plan to maximize savings in all areas of your budget, it's a good amount.
How Can I Add Money To My Walmart MoneyCard?
There are a few tried and true ways to add cash to your Walmart MoneyCard account. The first is to have your paycheck deposited directly onto the card. You can do this by talking with your payroll or benefits office and asking for a direct deposit request form.
From there, you can get your account and banking number by texting DD at 37267. You can use this information to fill out the form.
Another way to add money to your Walmart MoneyCard is by physically depositing cash at any Walmart store. You can do this by visiting a cashier and telling them you would like to do a "rapid reload" to your Walmart MoneyCard.
You can then give the cashier cash and swipe your card. The cash will then be available for use within 10 minutes. You should know, however, that this method will cost you $3, similar to an ATM fee.
You can also add money to your card electronically using the Walmart MoneyCard app. This app can be used to deposit amounts between $20 and $1,500.
You will be sent a deposit code to use, and you can receive up to three deposit codes per day for your use. There is no fee for this method, and your cash will be available to you within 10 minutes.
Depositing checks is another way to add money to your card. You can deposit any preprinted check, such as a payroll or government check. Personal checks are excluded.
You can deposit these checks through the MoneyCard app if you have a smartphone with a camera. Or you can cash the checks in person at any Walmart location and then reload the card using the cash. There is no fee if this is done using the app, but there is a cashing fee if done in person.
Lastly, you can add money to your card by transferring funds from your bank account. You can do this by linking your bank account with the Walmart MoneyCard on the app.
Can Someone Else Add Money To My Walmart MoneyCard?
Yes, friends and family can add money to your Walmart MoneyCard using a MoneyPak. They can purchase a MoneyPak at any Walmart, visit MoneyPak.com, and reload the card using the instructions. Money can be sent in amounts between $20 and $500. There is a $5.95 fee for this method.
It's easy to assume that because a card is supported by Walmart, you can't use it at other locations. We determined that while the Walmart Credit Card is limited to the Walmart enterprise, the Walmart MoneyCard can be used at any location that accepts Visa or Mastercard. We also noted that Paypal can be used with the MoneyCard.
We hope that this information has been enlightening to you and has given you the confidence to use your MoneyCard to maximize your savings.
